Surveillance roadmap
African countries are repurposing genomics capacities acquired during the COVID-19 pandemic to tackle antimicrobial resistance (AMR), which causes over 1.27 million deaths annually and contributes to 4.95 million deaths. The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) is championing a move from isolated research initiatives to integrated and coordinated public health strategies. The Africa-PGI aims to convince African governments to continue investing in genomics, and the surveillance system developed by Nigeria is validating bacterial infection tests across hospitals.
